HOW TO GET TO THE GULF OF OROSEI
There are no motorways in Sardinia; the double-laned S.S. 131 (Carlo Felice) is the largest highway and links the four provincial capitals.

By Car

  • from Cagliari: S.S. 131 to Nuoro, then follow the signs for Dorgali and Cala Gonone
  • from Olbia: S.S. 131 to Nuoro, then follow the signs for Dorgali and Cala Gonone
  • from Alghero: go to Nuoro (S.S. 131d), then follow the signs for Dorgali and Cala Gonone
  • from Porto Torres: go to Nuoro (S.S. 131d), then follow the signs for Dorgali e Cala Gonone

From Cagliari you can also take S.S. 125 Orientale Sarda, but read the following carefully:

  • longer: about 2 hours to Arbatax and then approximately another hour to Cala Gonone
  • very panoramic coast road
  • travel during the day to fully appreciate the scenery
  • very winding: may be tiring for small children.

By Bus (ARST - Sardinian Regional Transport Company)
ARST - Cagliari: tel. 070 4098222; 070 4098324; toll-free number 800865042.
Tickets may also be bought on board, with a surcharge.

HOW TO GET TO THE BAYS

By land:
Access to the bays of the Gulf of Orosei from the west is not possible, because the "Supramonte di Baunei" and "Supramonte di Dorgali" mountains are not paracticable by car. There are no roads which lead directly to the beaches, apart from Cartoe and Osalla.

By sea:
The easiest way to reach the bays is by sea. You can enjoy the spectacular views of the cliffs, the white limestone and the beautiful colours of the sea.
In Santa Maria Navarrese, Arbatax and Cala Gonone, you can take one of the many tourist boats which shuttle from the ports to the bays.
Trips are very frequent.
Tickets can be bought at the ports.

Renting a rubber dinghy is, in our opinion, a more charming way to visit the bays. You should book in advance, especially during the peak season.

SP's Advice
Take your shoes with you. You may have to jump from rock to rock.
For trekking, which is very exciting in these areas, contact one of the companies that supply guides.

SP's Warning
Do not go trekking without a guide in the Gulf hinterland, you might get lost.
