ORIGINS

Wine has been known in Sardinia since ancient times.
Remains of vases and jugs for wine have been found in the Island: they came from the Mycenaean area (Greece) and may be dated to the XIVth century BC.

When was grapevine introduced in Sardinia? And from whom?
Here are some hypotheses:

  • According to some, grapes and many other trees were brought to Sardinia by the Phoenicians;
  • Others believe that they were introduced by people coming from Greece and the northern African coasts.
  • The discovery of some grape seeds in the nuraghe Genna Maria in Villanovaforru is a proof of the presence of grapevines in Sardinia in the Early Iron Age (900 BC).
