ARCHAEOLOGY

The area surrounding Alghero is rich in important archaeological remains: the Roman bridge in Fertilia, the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Sant'Imbenia.

The most important sites are the pre-Nuraghic necropolises of Anghelu Ruju and Santu Pedru and the Nuraghic complexes of Palmavera and Sant'Imbenia.

  • The necropolis of Anghelu Ruju, not far from the airport, consists of 38 domus de janas dating back to the Ozieri Culture (3000 B.C.) decorated with with the bull and other symbols.
  • Among the Santu Pedru domus de janas, the most famous tomb is the one with the so-called "Tetropodal Vases". Here also there are sculptured bulls' heads on the walls.
  • The Nuraghic complex of Sant'Imbenia consists of a 3-tower nuraghe (Middle Bronz Age: VI cent. B.C.) surrounded by a hut village.
  • Nuraghe Palmavera: the complex, built between the XIII and VI cent. B.C., is an imposing Nuraghic fortress with two towers, made of white limestone.
It is surrounded by a village made of huts, among which the so-called "Meeting House" is particularly interesting.
  • Not far from Alghero, just a few kilometres from the town of Palmadula, near Capo dell' Argentiera, we find the mining centre of the same name, set up in the nineteenth century to exploit lead and zinc deposits. Abandoned in 1962, the site is an excellent example of industrial archaeology. Many of the sturctures of the main unit, made up of four rectangular buildings, are built of wood with sloping roofs, and fit into the incredibly beautiful panorama.
  • Along the coast there are several sixteenth-century towers, which were the defence system of  this area, along with many ramparts in Alghero. Galera Tower, Peschera Tower, Nuova Tower, Tramariglio Tower, Buro Tower, Pegna Tower and Porticciolo Tower deserve to be mentioned.
