PAINTING IN SARDINIA>MARIO DELITALA>HIS GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

HIS  GREAT  DECORATIVE  ACHIEVEMENTS

His greatest decorative work took place in the '20s, beginning with the decoration of the Nuoro Town Council Hall (1924-1926), destined to make him famous.
The idea of a "complete" work of art took shape, in which paintings were created in relation to the environment housing them.
Therefore, he also designed wall decorations and furnishings, which have unfortunately been lost.
However, at the Nuoro Art Museum (MAN) we can still see two of the four lunettes created for the Hall and "La cacciata dell'arrendadore", an imposing oil painting inspired by a historical event: the expulsion of the tax collector, which took place in Nuoro in 1772.
It is a hymn against oppression, based on a measured use of colour and a careful study of the historical sources of the period.

From that time on, Delitala's activity continued uninterrupted.
From 1926-1927, he decorated the cathedral in Lanusei.
Then he went to Sassari, where he worked on the Great Hall of the University (1928-1930) with the young Nivola and, in the early '30s, on the Great Hall of the Azuni Classical Lyceum.
In the meantime, he did not neglect easel painting, above all portraits, using extremely evocative expressive forms.
